Giving Kids a Confident Start — and Parents a Little Peace of Mind

Back-to-school season can be an exciting time - new routines, fresh supplies, and the chance to start a new chapter. But for many single parents, it can also bring a wave of stress. From pencils to lunch kits, the growing list of school supplies can add financial pressure during an already busy and emotional time.

That’s why we’re proud to help spread the word about a heartwarming initiative right here in Labrador City. The Single Parents Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPANL) is offering free back-to-school backpacks filled with essential supplies for kids of single-parent families - helping ease the burden and ensure every child starts the year off ready and confident.

This year, thanks to the generous support of RothLochston, this program is available locally and free to those who register. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading back to junior high, these backpacks are filled with care, and designed to support both your child’s learning and your family’s well-being.

What’s included?
Each backpack includes age-appropriate school supplies, plus helpful resources for parents and caregivers.

Who is eligible?
This initiative is open to single-parent families in Labrador West. Registration is free and easy.

How do I sign up?
Reach out to the Women’s Centre or connect with SPANL directly to register. You can also check out the link at the bottom of this article to learn more.

Back-to-school shouldn’t have to mean back to stress. We see the work single parents do every day and we’re here to support you in making sure your kids have what they need to thrive this fall.

Let’s build a community where every child starts the school year with confidence and every parent feels supported.
